In line with more than 30 cities in the world, Vilnius was a part of the International Open Data Hackathon last weekend. Around 50 ideas were brainstormed on Friday and seven best teams qualified to the finals on Sunday.

Check out the pictures here.

First Open Data Fest in Lithuania was organized almost two years ago. Lukas Savickas and Živilė Stubrytė, organizers of the first event, were excited to see how much the knowledge of the open data and ambitions of the participants have grown since that pilot event at the Lithuanian seaside.

During the event, Lithuanians connected with the hackers in Granada University (Spain) and had a chat about how are they doing and what ideas are they developing. Unfortunately teams could get in contact with hackers in Washington DC because the event there was canceled due to a heavy snow.

Although Open Data Fest 2015 started on Friday in Vilnius, last participant who joined the event came late on Saturday evening. It was a programmer who decided that hacking some Open Data is a more useful activity than spending a lazy weekend at home.

Here is the list of the final ideas of the Open Data Fest 2015 in Vilnius:

  1. GovHacking – a program to detect family relations between employees of public institutions.
  2. Vilnius City Quiz – a game where you have to guess if a picture matches the name of the place. Pictures are taken from Foursquare and screenshots from the city cameras.
  3. Net in Hand – an app which offers you a map to find Wi-Fi spots in the city.
  4. Tortuga – improving the system of Vilnius public city bike rental and other city networks.
  5. Safe Road – app which warns you about dangerous traffic conditions ahead.
  6. Open Plan – a public tool to simplify the urban planning documents and to show the future of urban areas so that all people, not only architects could understand.
  7. Analysis of Lithuanian web sites – the aim is to collect interesting, useful and fun information about Lithuanian web sites and give advice for their owners on improving them.

All these teams were awarded with prizes from the partners of the event: Startup Highway, Practica Capital and Escape Room. Main prize – smart phone from Microsoft went to Vilnius City Quiz team.

The majority of the teams are planning to continue working on their product. While the organizers – Enterprise Lithuania, Startup Lithuania, alumni of the Create for Lithuania program and Place I Live are planning the third Open Data Fest! Stay tuned for more information.
