There are 27000 professional software developers in Lithuania, it roughly translates into 1,8 developer for every 100 people in the labour force, a report by Stack Overflow, prepared for Google Developer Relations, suggests.

Though the total amount of software developers in the Lithuanian market exceed those of Estonia (20000) and Latvia (18000), Lithuania lags behind Estonia in terms of developer share per 100 people (3.0 in EE, 1.8 in LT, 1.7 in LV). And yet, all Baltic countries beat major markets such as Poland (1.4 per 100), Belarus (1.0) and Ukraine (0.7) in this regard.

Interestingly, Lithuania has the healthiest proportion of software developers working in the capital city of respective country – 64% Lithuanian developers work in Vilnius, and yet Tallinn hosts 75% of Estonia’s developer pool, while Riga – 93%. However, Ukraine has 41% of their developer pool working in Kiev, while only 29% Polish developers work in Warsaw.

The report suggests PHP is the most popular web language in the CEE, and Lithuania has the second largest share of PHP developers (25%+) in the region, surpassed only by Latvia. Estonians are good at Python though, where this language is neck and neck with PHP in terms of popularity.

The document also suggests Node.JS has been seeing huge gains in popularity across the CEE, including Lithuania. Python has also been on the rise in our region, and yet Lithuania is among the slowest adoptors.

Stack Overflow's report also covers areas such as mobile development. There, Lithuania is in line with a broader trend of having twice as many Android developers as iOS devs. Android popularity has been slowly declining in the region though, while the amount of iOS professionals remained steady.

These numbers were compiled by analysing data from Stack Overflow website. You can download the full report here.
